LSU’s Blake Baker reveals Harold Perkins’ position for 2025
Much has been made about what position is best for LSU football linebacker Harold Perkins. On Tuesday, LSU fans got an answer. Per a report from On3, LSU defensive coordinator Blake Baker plans to play Perkins at the STAR a position, making Perkins a safety/linebacker hybrid.
In 2024, the STAR position was manned by Major Burns.
Perkins was a five-star recruit and an elite pass rusher as a true freshman in 2022 but moved to inside linebacker in 2023.
With the change, Perkins’ impact on the game was lessened. He wasn’t in a position to make plays as often, and he struggled to fit the run. Perkins put together a solid campaign, emerging as one of the best coverage linebackers in the SEC while coming up with the occasional sack. But Perkins didn’t take over games like he did in 2022.
Perkins remained at inside linebacker in 2024, but tore his ACL in the win over UCLA. Perkins’ season was over before the calendar flipped to October.
LSU hopes that playing Perkins at the STAR spot allows the senior to be more comfortable while giving the defense flexibility.
Baker is a proven developer when it comes to linebackers. With another offseason under Baker, there’s optimism that Perkins can once again be one of the most dynamic defenders in the SEC.
It’s worth noting that Baker’s comments don’t mean Perkins will be an every-down player. There will be spots where LSU prefers to have a true defensive back on the field. Perkins is still expected to play a big role, especially as a pass rusher in LSU’s third down package.
Perkins’ ability to drop into coverage also allows LSU to disguise looks.
In three years with the Tigers, Perkins has 69 pressures and 16 sacks, per PFF. He’s forced seven fumbles to go along with two interceptions.
With Perkins returning alongside junior Whit Weeks, LSU’s linebacker core is among the best in the nation. Dahvon Keys will factor in, too, after a breakout freshman campaign.
