Tennessee Vols Star Simmons Arrested After Alleged Spending Spree
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – University of Tennessee Volunteers linebacker Elijah Simmons was arrested late Monday night on charges of felony theft and fraudulent use of a credit card. The arrest follows an alleged spending spree at several Knoxville businesses, totaling over $10,000.
According to the Knoxville Police Department (KPD), officers responded to a report of fraudulent credit card activity at a local high-end clothing store. The investigation led them to Simmons, who allegedly used a stolen credit card to make multiple purchases at various establishments, including restaurants, electronics stores, and a jewelry shop.
The KPD’s report indicates that the stolen credit card belonged to an unnamed individual, and the investigation is ongoing to determine the full extent of the alleged fraudulent activity. Simmons was apprehended without incident and booked into the Knox County Jail. He is currently being held on a $100,000 bond.
University officials have released a brief statement regarding the incident, stating that they are aware of the arrest and are cooperating fully with law enforcement. They also stated that Simmons has been suspended indefinitely from all team activities pending the outcome of the investigation.
“The University of Tennessee takes matters of this nature very seriously,” the statement read. “We are committed to upholding the highest standards of conduct and will take appropriate action based on the findings of the investigation.”
The arrest comes as a significant blow to the Volunteers football program, as Simmons was expected to be a key contributor to the team’s defense this season. His absence will undoubtedly impact the team’s performance, particularly given his starting role in previous seasons. The incident also raises questions about the future of Simmons’s collegiate career, with potential disciplinary actions from the university and legal ramifications pending. The case is currently under review.
