Arizona State Sun Devils Head Coach Greg Powers to Depart After Contract Ends
TEMPE, AZ – Arizona State Sun Devils hockey head coach Greg Powers has announced he will depart from the program at the conclusion of his current contract. Powers, who has been the face of Sun Devils hockey since its transition to NCAA Division I in 2015, confirmed his decision in a statement released Thursday.
Powers, 45, has overseen the rise of the Sun Devils’ hockey program from a club team to a competitive force in college hockey. Under his leadership, Arizona State made significant strides, with Powers helping the team achieve its first-ever NCAA tournament appearance in 2021. His tenure has been marked by a commitment to building a successful program, both on and off the ice, while recruiting top talent and developing players for professional hockey.
“I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve built here at Arizona State,” Powers said. “The progress this program has made, from where we started to where we are now, is something I’ll always look back on with immense pride. It’s been an honor to work with so many talented student-athletes and staff members, and I’m grateful for the opportunity.”
Powers’ departure comes after a challenging 2024-2025 season, where the Sun Devils finished near the bottom of the standings in the competitive NCAA landscape. While the team’s performance was mixed during the last few seasons, Powers remained a dedicated and passionate leader for his players and the ASU community.
Arizona State has not yet announced a replacement for Powers, but athletic director Ray Anderson praised his efforts and contributions to the program’s growth.
“We thank Greg for his tireless dedication and leadership, and we wish him nothing but success in his future endeavors,” Anderson said in a statement.
The Sun Devils will now begin their search for a new head coach, hoping to build on the foundation Powers has laid for the future of Arizona State hockey.
