Kentucky Football Coach Mark Stoops Officially Retains Role as Head Coach

LEXINGTON, KY — After months of speculation and uncertainty, Mark Stoops has officially retained his position as the head coach of the Kentucky Wildcats football team. Stoops, who has been at the helm since 2013, led the Wildcats to a historic 2023 season, further solidifying his place as one of the most successful coaches in the program’s history.

The University of Kentucky made the announcement on Friday, following a series of high-level meetings between Stoops, athletic director Mitch Barnhart, and university officials. While Stoops’ contract had been under review amid discussions about his performance and the direction of the program, the decision to keep him was based on his continued success, including multiple bowl appearances and the development of a competitive team in the Southeastern Conference (SEC).

“We are excited to continue working with Mark and his staff as we build on the success we’ve experienced under his leadership,” Barnhart said in a statement. “Mark has consistently delivered a strong football program, and we are confident in his vision for the future of Kentucky football.”

Stoops, who has compiled a 66-56 record during his tenure, has led Kentucky to its first 10-win season in over four decades, marking a significant milestone for the program. The Wildcats’ 2023 campaign saw them finish with an 8-4 regular-season record and a victory in a prestigious bowl game, further showcasing Stoops’ ability to build a competitive team in one of the most difficult conferences in college football.

“I am grateful for the trust and support the University of Kentucky has shown me,” Stoops said. “We’re committed to continuing to develop our players and bring championship-level football to Lexington.”

With Stoops’ future secured, Kentucky fans can now look forward to the 2024 season, where expectations will remain high as the program aims to build on its recent successes.
