BYU Football Officially Names Ty Detmer as New Offensive Coordinator
BYU Football has officially announced the hiring of former Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer as the program’s new offensive coordinator. Detmer, who spent a significant portion of his career at BYU both as a player and a coach, returns to Provo to take on a critical role in revitalizing the Cougars’ offensive attack.
Detmer, a legendary figure in BYU history, had a stellar college career under coach LaVell Edwards, winning the 1990 Heisman Trophy after leading the Cougars to a national ranking and an undefeated season. He remains one of the program’s most accomplished quarterbacks, holding numerous records for passing yards and touchdowns. Following his playing career, Detmer transitioned to coaching, including a stint as BYU’s offensive coordinator from 2017 to 2020.
The decision to bring Detmer back to Provo comes as the Cougars look to reinvigorate their offense following a series of inconsistent seasons. BYU’s offense has struggled at times in recent years, and the program hopes that Detmer’s vast experience and knowledge will help guide the team back to prominence.
“I am excited to return to BYU and help lead this team to success,” Detmer said in a statement. “The BYU football program has meant so much to me, and I’m looking forward to working with the players and coaching staff to develop an offense that reflects the rich tradition of excellence here.”
Detmer’s return is seen as a significant move by BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe, who expressed confidence in his ability to elevate the offense. “Ty is a tremendous coach with a deep understanding of BYU football. He knows the program inside and out and brings a passion for the game that will resonate with our players,” Holmoe said.
With Detmer back on board, BYU fans are hopeful that the team’s offensive fortunes will improve as the Cougars aim for success in their new conference home, the Big 12.
