Arizona State Baseball Head Coach Willie Bloomquist Announces Return of Former Player Brian Serven on Six-Month Contract
Tempe, AZ — Arizona State University baseball head coach Willie Paul Bloomquist made an exciting announcement today, confirming the return of former Sun Devils catcher Brian Serven on a six-month contract. The move is a significant boost for the program as Serven brings valuable experience both as a former player and a seasoned professional.
Serven, who played for Arizona State from 2014 to 2017, had an impressive collegiate career before being drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 9th round of the 2017 MLB Draft. After a successful stint in the minors, including a major league call-up in 2021, Serven now returns to his alma mater to contribute to the program in a coaching capacity.
In his statement, Coach Bloomquist expressed his excitement about Serven’s return. “Brian has always been a standout player, not just for his skill but also for his leadership and understanding of the game. He’s been successful at the highest levels, and his experiences will be invaluable in mentoring our current players and elevating the team’s performance.”
Serven, who played a key role in Arizona State’s run to multiple postseason appearances, will now focus on helping develop the next generation of Sun Devils, particularly in working with the team’s catchers and hitters. His time in professional baseball offers him a unique perspective that will be critical as the team aims to return to national prominence.
The six-month contract comes at a crucial time as Bloomquist continues to build a competitive roster for the upcoming season. Serven’s expertise in the fundamentals of the game, combined with his recent professional experience, makes him an ideal addition to the coaching staff during this critical transition period for Arizona State baseball.
“I’m excited to give back to the program that gave me so much,” Serven said. “I can’t wait to work with the players and help the team grow both on and off the field.”
