Former Kansas Wildcats QB Josh Freeman Returns as Assistant Coach

Former Kansas Wildcats quarterback Josh Freeman has made a significant return to his alma mater, stepping into an assistant coaching role within the football program. Freeman, who was one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in the history of the Kansas football team, has agreed to join the coaching staff for the 2025 season.

Freeman, a native of Kansas City, first made his mark with the Wildcats in the mid-2000s. He played under head coach Mark Mangino and led the team to several memorable victories, including a historic win in the 2008 Insight Bowl. As a quarterback, Freeman set numerous records for passing yards, touchdowns, and overall efficiency, solidifying himself as one of the top players in program history. After his successful college career, Freeman went on to play in the NFL, notably with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he spent several years as the team’s starting quarterback.

Now, after years of professional experience, Freeman is returning to Kansas with the goal of mentoring the next generation of quarterbacks and helping to elevate the team’s offensive game. His experience as a starting QB in both college and the NFL will be invaluable to the Wildcats, who are aiming to build a more competitive program. Freeman’s role will focus on working with quarterbacks, offering guidance on both technical skills and game strategy.

In his announcement, Freeman expressed excitement about returning to the team that helped shape his career and stated that he was eager to give back to the program. “Kansas gave me so much, and I’m excited to help the current players reach their full potential,” Freeman said. His return has already sparked excitement among fans and players, with many eager to see how his leadership will impact the team.
