Tottenham Hotspur have officially completed the signing of defender Orkun Kökçü from Benfica on a five-year deal. The transfer marks a significant move for Spurs as they continue to bolster their defensive options ahead of the upcoming season. The 22-year-old Turkish center-back joins the North London club in a deal reportedly worth £35 million, which includes various performance-related add-ons.
Kökçü, who has impressed with Benfica over the past seasons, will bring much-needed depth to Spurs’ backline. The highly-rated defender is known for his commanding presence in the air, strong tackling abilities, and impressive reading of the game, making him a versatile option for manager Ange Postecoglou. His arrival is seen as a key part of Tottenham’s strategy to strengthen their squad after a challenging 2023/24 season.
Having come through the youth ranks at Turkish side Fenerbahçe, Kökçü made a name for himself in Portugal’s Primeira Liga with Benfica, where he became a regular starter. His performances were integral to Benfica’s success, particularly in their Champions League campaign, where they advanced to the knockout stages. With an eye for cutting-edge defensive strategies and an ability to contribute offensively when needed, Kökçü is expected to fit well into Postecoglou’s tactical setup.
In a statement, Tottenham’s Director of Football, Fabio Paratici, expressed excitement over the new acquisition, praising Kökçü’s potential to grow and develop further at the club. “We are delighted to welcome Orkun to Tottenham Hotspur. He has demonstrated exceptional talent and maturity for his age, and we believe he has the attributes to thrive in the Premier League,” Paratici said.
Kökçü, meanwhile, expressed his excitement about joining Tottenham and the challenge that lies ahead in England’s top flight. “I am thrilled to be here, and I can’t wait to get started with my new teammates. I am ready to work hard and contribute to the team’s success,” he said.
This signing represents a crucial step in Tottenham’s aim to return to the top of English football.
