Indiana football coach Curt Cignetti named Home Depot National Coach of the Year

BLOOMINGTON — Indiana football coach Curt Cignetti was named the Home Depot National Coach of the Year on Thursday night during the College Football Awards show.

In his first season as IU’s coach, Cignetti led the program to one of the biggest ever single-season FBS turnarounds at eight wins and counting. The Hoosiers (11-1; 8-1) won double-digit games for the first time and locked up their first-ever CFP appearance and will play a first-round game on Dec. 20 against Notre Dame in South Bend.

He is the fourth Indiana head coach to win a national coach of the year award — Bo McMillin (1945), John Pont (1967) and Tom Allen (2020) — and is also a finalist for the Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year, AFCA National Coach of the Year: and on the Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Award watch list.

Cignetti was recently named the Big Ten Coach of the Year by the conference coaches and media. He’s won conference coach of the year honors at each of his previous head coaching stops.

Indiana signed Cignetti to a new contract in November that will pay him a $8 million a year along with an annual $1 million retention bonus through 2032. He earned a $50,000 bonus for winning Big Ten Coach of the Year and $100,000 for winning a national coach of the year award.
