COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – Senior wide receiver Moose Muhammad III did not see the field Saturday against Bowling Green and has had a rare presence on the field this season.
Elko reiterated that consistency is what is needed for Muhammad to get more playing time.
“It’s no different than the last time we talked about Moose,” Elko said. “He’s got to be consistent and that’s what we’re looking for from him, consistency.”
So far this season, Muhammad has four targets, a pair in each of the McNeese and Florida games. He has turned those into three catches for 43 yards and a touchdown. In total he’s lined up for 23 passing snaps, according to PFF.
He had a career-high 60 targets in 2022. That season he tallied career highs in receptions with 38, yards with 609 and touchdowns with four. He lined up for 305 snaps that year per PFF. However, that dwindled to 37 targets in 281 snaps last season.
“We challenged him to do the things he needed to do to put himself in a position to have a successful game and I think he did that starting Monday,” Elko said after the McNeese win. “He had a really good week of preparation. We felt really confident that he was going to be able to go out there and execute what we wanted him to. When he does that and he’s consistent, he can help us.”
This season, Jabre Barber and Terry Bussey have separated themselves and rotational options at receiver, with the pair claiming a combined 72 snaps. Aggie receiving newcomer Cyrus Allen leads the team in receiving yards with 181 and is averaging 18.1 yards per reception.
Texas A&M sophomore quarterback Conner Weigman will remain a game-time decision this week as he continues to recover from an AC join sprain sustained during the season-opening loss to Notre Dame, head coach Mike Elko said Monday.
It echoes a statement made by Elko on his radio show last Wednesday, saying that the starting quarterback choice will be a game-time decision for the remainder of the season.
Freshman Marcel Reed earned praise from Elko for statistically consistent performances between his start at Florida and against Bowling Green. He threw for 178 yards against Florida and 173 against Bowling Green, with two passing touchdowns in both games. He also was just shy of the century mark rushing on 13 and 12 carries respectively.
