Brigham Young University (BYU) football coach Kalani Sitake has announced his resignation following a decision made by the university’s athletic department. Sitake, who has been with the team since 2016, confirmed his departure in a statement released earlier today, citing a mutual agreement with the university’s leadership after the club decided to move in a new direction.

The decision comes after a challenging season for the BYU Cougars, who finished with a subpar record, disappointing many fans and alumni. While Sitake’s tenure included significant accomplishments, such as leading the Cougars to a 2020 11-1 season and their first top-10 finish since 1996, the program struggled to maintain momentum in recent years. The team’s inconsistent performance and failure to meet expectations ultimately led to the parting of ways.

In his statement, Sitake expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve as the head coach of the program and acknowledged the support he received from the university, staff, and players. “It’s been an incredible honor to lead this team, and I’m proud of what we accomplished together,” Sitake said. “However, after discussions with the administration, we mutually agreed that the time has come for a change.”

BYU officials thanked Sitake for his dedication and leadership, recognizing his significant contributions to the football program. “Coach Sitake has been a pillar of strength for BYU football, and we are grateful for his time here,” said Tom Holmoe, BYU’s athletic director.

The search for a new head coach is expected to begin immediately. Fans are eager to see how the program will reshape its future, with hopes of returning to national prominence. Sitake’s resignation marks the end of an era at BYU, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and passion.
