Tottenham Hotspur Chairman Confirms Four Players Will Leave After Their Contracts Expire
Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy has officially announced that four key players will depart the club once their contracts expire at the end of the current season. The decision marks a significant shift in the club’s strategy as they aim to rejuvenate the squad for the future.
In a statement released by Spurs, Levy confirmed that the quartet—comprised of long-serving stars and key figures—will be leaving North London after failing to reach new agreements on extensions. The players in question are midfielder Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, veteran defender Eric Dier, goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, and forward Lucas Moura.
Højbjerg, who has been a central figure in midfield since joining in 2020, has reportedly been in discussions over a new contract, but negotiations broke down as Spurs looked to freshen up their midfield. Dier, a dependable presence in the defense for nearly a decade, has struggled for consistent first-team minutes under manager Ange Postecoglou this season, which seemingly contributed to his lack of a new deal.
Club captain Hugo Lloris, the longest-serving player at Spurs, has also been a casualty of the club’s evolving plans. After a series of inconsistent performances last season, Lloris has been sidelined as Spurs bring in younger talent to challenge for the number one spot.
Lucas Moura, who arrived from São Paulo in 2018, has made fewer appearances in recent seasons, largely due to injuries and a lack of starting opportunities.
Levy expressed gratitude to each of the players for their contribution to the club but emphasized that the time had come to move in a new direction. The departures are expected to free up wage space and potentially fund reinforcements in key areas, as Spurs continue their ambitious rebuild under Postecoglou.
As the season progresses, Spurs will likely target replacements to ensure a competitive squad heading into the new campaign.
