It took him a while, but he did it… and right with three wins! Eli Tomac won the Triple Crown in AMA Supercross 450 and thus achieved his first round win this year in the championship, in St Louis. With this win Tomac made history and beat Ricky Carmichael to become the rider with the most wins between AMA Supercross and Motocross, 217.
The Dome at America’s Center welcomed the riders for the 12th round of the AMA and the Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing rider was the big star, winning all of the night’s main heats.
In the first race, he didn’t lead the first lap, with Hunter Lawrence taking centre stage, but from then on Tomac took control of the session and won categorically with a 3.44s lead over Jett Lawrence, Aaron Plessinger was third. Jason Anderson and Cooper Webb were in the top five respectively.
For the second race the scenario was quite different and with a bitter taste for championship leader Jett Lawrence. Justin Cooper led the first lap, but over the next 12 laps the Honda rider showed a completely different level to the others and increasingly gained time on the second-placed rider, but… he wouldn’t win. The reason? Lawrence ended up being penalised two positions for jumping in a red flag zone, which “gave” the win to Tomac. Hunter finished second, ahead of his brother Jett.
In the final race of the night, Tomac put in a memorable performance and won clearly and unequivocally! He got the holeshot and led from start to finish, leaving Webb at 2.55s and Chase Sexton at 4.674s.
With 25 points Tomac won the round and moved up to fourth in the championship, Webb was second (second in the standings) and Hunter Lawrence was third (tenth overall), guaranteeing his best performance to date.
