Josh Sargent, the striker for the United States, will not play in Saturday’s friendly against Colombia and may not be selected for the Copa America team.

Sargent, a 24-year-old from O’Fallon, Missouri, played in the second-tier League Championship of England with Norwich, scoring 16 goals in 26 league games. However, he ended the season with foot swelling.

“He won’t be able to participate in the Columbia game. Coach Gregg Berhalter of the United States stated on Friday, “We’ll have to wait and see if he makes it for the Brazil game, and then we’ll have to make a decision if he makes it on the Copa America roster.”

On Wednesday, the United States plays Brazil in Orlando, Florida, following its match against Colombia in Landover, Maryland. The United States plays Uruguay on July 1 in Kansas City, Missouri, Panama four days later, and Bolivia on June 23 in Arlington, Texas, to start the Copa America tournament.

After Sergiño Dest tore his right ACL in April, Berhalter needs to choose a right back to replace him.

“I think this is a really important tournament for us as a team, and Copa America is crucial to the development of this group. This is the final major competition prior to the World Cup. Although the teams are not as good as Copa America, we will still have the Gold Cup, Berhalter said. It’s a foundation that will help you enter the World Cup with assurance. Thus, I believe that the group can gain a great deal of momentum from this. It could boost the group’s confidence.”
