Cade Povich is the ninth different starting pitcher to take the mound for the Baltimore Orioles this season, continuing the team’s pitching carousel of 2024.
In 5.1 innings pitched, the team’s ninth prospect gave up 6 runs and 4 walks in a poor showing in his Major League debut. During the 6-5 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays, he had an ERA of 10.13.
However, captain Brandon Hyde told reporters following the game that he wouldn’t think twice about going to Povich in the future.
“No, I wouldn’t. Very impressed with him, Hyde remarked on June 6. I thought he did an excellent job handling everything today. A debut’s contents are always unpredictable. against a hitting club that is exclusively right-handed in a difficult setting. I thought he did a great job.
Just two days before making his Major League debut, the 24-year-old was released from the Norfolk Tides, his Triple-A affiliate.
The Orioles are attempting to rest a number of starters during a 40-day stretch that has just one off day. Kyle Bradish is one such starter who would normally start on June 6 against the Blue Jays.
In the bottom of the third inning, Povich walked two and then allowed Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to launch a 356-foot home run. The Orioles were unable to overcome the 3-0 score.
The Baltimore captain continued to compliment the lefty’s delivery and composure on the mound.
Hyde remarked, “I was really impressed by him.” The way he threw the ball was admirable. Guerrero set up the home run with just a couple of walks. Then a misfortune struck in shallow right field. I’m guessing he wants only a few pitches back. The poise on the mound pleased me. In his first major league start, he went on the road and pitched into the sixth inning. felt he did a fantastic job.
