Yankees fans fooled on Giancarlo Stanton flyout
The New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers kicked off a three-game series at Yankee Stadium on Friday night, and in the bottom of the eighth inning, designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton sent the crowd into a frenzy.
With the bases loaded and the game still scoreless, Stanton connected with a Blake Treinen fastball and sent it deep to left field. Fans went berserk thinking the game had just been broken open, but that’s not what happened. Not even close.
Although the crack of the bat had that familiar sound, Stanton had gotten under the ball a bit. And while the crowd roared thinking it was a grand slam, it turned out to be little more than a flyout.
Perhaps it’s something the fans get from announcer Michael Kay, who routinely makes flyouts or doubles sound like potential home runs.
Things got no better for the Yankees, or their fans, from there, as they ultimately fell to the Dodgers, 2-1, in 11 innings. The loss snapped an eight-game winning streak and allowed the Philadelphia Phillies to take over with the best record in baseball (44-19).
Giancarlo Stanton finished the game going 0-for-5 with three strikeouts.
The Yankees and Dodgers will resume their three-game set on Saturday night.
