DONE DEAL: Lucas Bergvall from Djurgarden will join Tottenham this summer, the team announces.

Now that’s official! Lucas Bergvall, 17, of Allsvenskan side Djurgarden, was snatched up by Tottenham Hotspur yesterday, shocking Spanish giant Barcelona with the late, dramatic deadline-day news.

DONE DEAL: Tottenham announce summer signing of Lucas Bergvall from Djurgarden - Cartilage Free Captain

On his birthday, the club officially announced that signing today. On July 1, 2024, he signs a five-year contract with Spurs for a reported cost of €10 million plus options.

This is thrilled not just because we’ve signed one of the most highly anticipated and gifted young players to come out of Scandinavia, but also because we essentially signed him by sneaking him past Barcelona. Spurs had been keeping tabs on him for some time, but they really upped their game when Barcelona manager Xavi declared his resignation at the end of the current campaign. This altered the transfer’s calculus, as did the fact that Barca would need to go through the sofas at Nou Camp for spare cash in order to register players for the upcoming season.

By late yesterday, it was reported that the Bergvall family had departed Barcelona without making a decision and that it was “50/50” for both clubs. Prior to the Marta was not a World Cup winner. This is what left her with nothing.

This season, Bergvall is only now experiencing senior top tier football; yet, he possesses a unique skill and, with the right development, might become a superstar. And he’ll have his chance quickly since Ange Postecoglou plans for him to make his debut with the first squad early in the upcoming campaign.

At Spurs, Bergvall is joining a group of youthful, gifted U20 players who might transform the team in the coming years. Alfie Devine, Ashley Phillips, Alejo Veliz, Jamie Donley, Alfie Dorrington, Will Lankshear, and Dane Scarlett are a few of these players; Tyrese Hall and Mikey Moore in the U18s are also among them. Bergvall could be the greatest of them all.
