Mike Tomlin’s biggest tasks as head coach of the Steelers is leading a club that is barely making it to the finish

Local and national media have been at odds with Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin for years. The national media frequently extols Tomlin while presenting his continuous string of winning seasons as proof of his superiority. When arguing that Tomlin isn’t as good as the rest of the nation believes, local media typically cites Tomlin’s lack of postseason success among other factors.
What is the reality? Most likely, it falls somewhere in the center. Yes, Tomlin deserves a great deal of praise for his unmatched consistency and capacity to build winning teams. In case you forgot, he also had another participation in the big game and a Super Bowl triumph.

That confidence was largely fueled by the anticipation of improved play from Kenny Pickett in his first full season as quarterback. The Steelers didn’t run from the expectations; on the opening day of training camp, General Manager Omar Khan spoke candidly about his optimism for this squad.

This club has utterly failed in the offensive department. It got to the point where, following a humiliating loss in Cleveland during Week 11, former offensive coordinator Matt Canada was let go. Pickett’s development has been hampered by the offense’s (to put it very kindly) issues, which also raise the question of whether the club should search for a new quarterback this summer (they shouldn’t, but that’s a debate for another day). Given the offensive unit’s shortcomings, Tomlin has to find a seasoned offensive coordinator to oversee the team going forward.

If you believe something to be unimportant, reconsider. Rooney doesn’t have to renew Tomlin’s contract, but he also won’t dismiss him—nor should he. The agreement with Tomlin, which was not renewed this past summer, expires at the conclusion of the 2024 campaign. It’s possible that Rooney won’t choose to re-extend Tomlin’s contract this summer if Pittsburgh has a disappointing season (i.e., misses the playoffs), which would leave him a lame duck coach in 2024.

After his coaching career ends, there will probably still be those who mistrust Tomlin despite not winning another Super Bowl. That’s just the nature of the work, particularly as the coach of one of the most successful teams in American professional sports during the previous fifty years. In order for this season to be deemed successful, the Steelers must qualify for the postseason. The majority of the local media undoubtedly won’t be satisfied, but it should be plenty to appease the general public and keep the country praising Tomlin while giving hope for better times in 2024.
