James Cook says Georgia would have won it all if the CFP committee had known that Saban was retiring.
Buffalo Bills and former Georgia running back James Cook said that Georgia would have won the championship if they had been allowed in and that the CFP committee was aware of Nick Saban’s retirement.
It will soon be one month since the famous Nick Saban announced his retirement from football and the Michigan Wolverines won the national championship. But as time has shown, college football supporters harbor resentment and will always support their teams, and former players may feel the same way.
James Cook, a current Buffalo Bill and former Georgia running back, described to USA Today how the Bulldogs were denied three consecutive national titles. Cook was a member of the 2021 national championship squad, which defeated Alabama to snap the program’s more than 40-year championship drought. What Cook said was as follows:
“We were anticipated to participate in the playoffs this
It’s difficult to disagree with Cooks’ reasoning in some sense. especially when it was shown that, had they participated in this year’s national championship game, Georgia would have preferred over both Michigan and Washington. Still, it was the Wolverines—not the Bulldogs—who fulfilled the necessary tasks to be proclaimed winners this season. All signs, however, indicate that 2024 will present head coach Kirby Smart and his team with yet another fantastic chance to challenge for a title.
Cook recently had an incredible second season in the NFL, making history with the Buffalo Bills. Cook averaged 4.7 yards per run while rushing for 1,122 yards in 2023. He also scored 445 receiving yards. He is the first Bill to surpass 1,000 running yards since LeSeason McCoy in 2017 and the first since Marshawn Lynch in 2007 to do so in his first two years of play.
