The recently signed Cleveland player regrets joining the team because of…
Former Browns cornerback A.J. Green III has signed with the Vikings on a reserve/futures deal, the team announced on Tuesday.
Green, 25, signed as an undrafted free agent out of Oklahoma State in 2020 and has played his whole career with Cleveland. Throughout his time with the Browns, he alternated between the active roster and the practice squad, appearing in 34 games (two of which were starts). Over the previous four years, Green participated in slightly over 300 defensive snaps and nearly 500 special teams snaps.
Green is known to Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah from his stint as the vice president of football operations with the Browns (2020–21).
Though he didn’t play much in 2020 or 2023, Green was an important member of the Browns’ special teams and their backup corner in 2021 and 2022. In 29 appearances, including two starts, he recorded two interceptions, seven passes defended, and two fumble recoveries in somewhat limited action. He received a 90.3 PFF coverage grade on 116 snaps in 2021 (and a bad 41.8 coverage mark the following year), while the sample size is limited.
Green has great size at 6’2″, 200 pounds, but scored poorly in the athletic tests at the 2020 combine, which contributed to him going undrafted
In 2024, Green ought to have the opportunity to contend for a spot on the practice squad or roster of the Vikings. His length and prior expertise on special teams are positive factors.
