Ronnie O’Sullivan makes feelings clear on controversial Saudi tournament that has bizarre ‘golden ball’ rules

O’Sullivan is set to appear at the World Snooker Tour’s newest event in Saudi Arabia, currently scheduled for March.

‘The Rocket’ will compete in a 10-player event consisting of the top eight in the world plus two ‘wildcard’ entries.

The “golden ball,” or “Riyadh Season ball” as it is officially called, has generated the greatest controversy.

It can only be potted once a player has achieved a maximum break of 147, however it will be worth 20 points.

If the ball will remain on the table the entire game, the World Snooker Tour has not yet confirmed this. Furthermore, it is unclear if players who hit it too early will face consequences.

On Sunday night, O’Sullivan—who is still considered among the best in the world—overcame Judd Trump to win the World Grand Prix.

The 48-year-old has won four trophies this season and everyone was waiting for his verdict on the upcoming event out in the Middle East.

After winning over the weekend, O’Sullivan said, “Have they announced the award for a 167 yet?

It will undoubtedly be a substantial award. As they are a formidable force, the Saudis are free to act however they like.

I think it will go well, and it would be wonderful to play outside. Since Saudi Arabia seems to be the center of activity for every other sport, getting outside would be fantastic.”

The second-ranked player in the world, Trump, supported the adoption of a “golden ball.”

He declared: “It’s entirely distinct. Hopefully, all of the players can support their attempt at something new.

March will see the inaugural invitational World of Snooker visit the country, including O’Sullivan with players like Judd Trump and Luca Brecel.

With the addition of a 23rd ball to the table, there will be one notable variation from the way snooker is currently played in all of the games.

The “Riyadh Season ball,” which will be gold in color, will be the name of the brand-new ball that will be tested for the first time in Saudi Arabia.

The new golden ball will have a point value of 20, but players will only be allowed to pot it when every other ball on the table has been cleared, unless they are on maximum break.

Additionally, the extra points increase the impressiveness of a maximum break as, for this tournament, the customary 147 will become 167.
