The San Antonio Spurs’ 117-98 thrashing of rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama on Wednesday night gave a 2023 Draft pick the chance to make his NBA debut.

With 3:03 remaining, Jordan Walsh entered the game to a standing ovation. JD Davison, who is playing with the Maine Celtics and the former Arkansas Razorback on a two-way contract, was standing next to him at the scorer’s table

Following Sunday afternoon’s 131-125 victory over the Sioux Falls Skyforce by Boston’s G League affiliate, Davison—who finished with 36 points, seven rebounds, and ten assists—told Maine Celtics play-by-play analyst Brendan Glasheen what he wanted Walsh to know before the rookie guard checked into an NBA game for the first time. This was Davison’s 15th double-double and third 30-point performance of the 2023–24 campaign.

“I’m trying to find you,” the second-year guard said. “Get your first bucket, man, it’s gonna be unbelievable.'”

To the dismay of his teammates and the TD Garden supporters, the 19-year-old’s lone field goal attempt—a clean shot from beyond the arc—did not fall, but he made a good impression by grabbing four rebounds in his brief time on the court.

“It was an incredible experience,” an ecstatic Walsh said following the game. “It’s incredible that I was able to wear that jersey—there is so much history with this company and in this building. I will undoubtedly remember this achievement for the rest of my life.

“The rook has been working, man,” declared Jaylen Brown following the victory. Brown packed the stat sheet with 21 points, seven rebounds, five assists, a steal, and a block. He is improving (and still developing). He’s obviously been in Maine, but from what I’ve heard, it seems nice. Seeing him go out there and immediately display some improvement—getting out there and grabbing four rebounds, for example—shows that he has some

The rookie forward said, “It’s all about being that role player that Boston wants.” “Of course, do whatever it takes to come compete with us here and support our championship win. That is the principal aim. I’m therefore focused on doing whatever it takes to obtain that.”

In what way was his first NBA game experience?

Indeed, it was incredible,” he said. “I’m never going to forget that.”

Walsh’s NBA debut may not be far behind his next opportunity to suit up for the parent club. He has been called up by the Celtics for their three-game road trip, which begins on Sunday night against the Houston Rockets. Jrue Holiday and Al Horford, two of their top six players, are not available for this game.
