The Phillies have signed a key player on a 4 years deal.
The Phillies have announced a list of non-roster invitees to spring training, mostly for in-house minor leaguers or minor league free agent signees with widely reported contracts. One of the invited is right-hander Ryan Burr, who spent the 2023 campaign in the Rays’ system after signing a minor league pact last winter. Burr has spent parts of four big league seasons with the White Sox and has a 3.09 ERA with a 25% strikeout rate and 3.3% walk rate. However, he has been on and off the injured list throughout the season, missing time in 2022 with a shoulder strain and the entire 2020 season following Tommy John surgery.
Burr, with 75 innings in the big leagues, demonstrated his best performance in 2021 with a 2.45 ERA in 36 2/3 frames, fanning 22% of opponents and keeping the ball on the ground at 57%. Despite his 13.9% strikeout rate and 12.2% walk rate, Burr’s command in the Rays’ top minor league affiliate last year was not an issue. If he can improve his command in 2024, he could be an intriguing addition to the team’s depth chart.
