Everton’s issues never seem to stop, as this revelation suggests that the team may face additional difficulties in 2024 following the absolutely horrible year that concluded last year.
The most severe points penalty in English football history from the previous season sent the Toffees back into the relegation zone, despite their best efforts to escape it in the first place.
The Blues played well at initially and went on a four-game winning streak after losing to Manchester United in their opening game following the penalty call.
But since then, they have suffered three straight losses—to Wolves in their final 2023 games, Manchester City, and Tottenham. The club was now just above the drop zone in 17th position.
The team eventually ran out of steam as the year came to an end, as the feastive period put tremendous pressure on Sean Dyche’s small roster and several important injuries undermined their momentum.
And Everton would be in grave, potentially fatal difficulty if another penalty were to be called, especially if it meant that additional points would be taken away.
I don’t think the Blues would be able to bounce back from another points penalty recommendation from the football authorities if it were implemented this season.
It would be very tough for them to recover even if they lost three more points this season, though that seems unlikely as the punishment would probably be carried over to the following season. Who knows, though?
As things stand, Dyche has stated that the team will not be making many, if any, moves during the January transfer window, which supports what Kevin Thelwell has been stating for a while.
A very difficult start to 2024 is created by the combination of point penalties, bad performance on the field without many chances of additional reinforcements coming through the doors, and ongoing uncertainty over the club’s future ownership.
At least the club’s FA Cup match at Crystal Palace tomorrow will provide a reprieve from the Premier League this week.
