Leeds United players are expected to leave in the coming weeks.

FLW examines the players most likely to leave Leeds United in the January transfer window.

Leeds United has no plans to offload their best players during the January transfer window.
Despite injuries and a lack of playing time, players like Willy Gnonto and Junior Firpo are expected to stay at Leeds.
Leeds may be hoping for a more orderly January transfer season than the previous summer window.

Leeds United are flying high in the Championship under Daniel Farke, but there are lots of players who aren’t getting much playing time and will be playing first-team football elsewhere in January.

Farke has admitted to Leeds Live that the Whites have no intention of selling their best players during the January transfer window. As a result, Willy Gnonto and others are likely to be retained.

It also suggests that players like Junior Firpo are more likely than not to stay at West Yorkshire, despite the fact that injuries have kept him out of action.

Leeds had a busy summer window, with plenty of incomings to balance the losses of several loan players, due in part to contract stipulations. Farke and company may be hoping for a less tumultuous January this time around.

After allowing Sam Greenwood to leave on loan to Middlesbrough during the summer, questions have been raised this week about the possibility of Leeds sanctioning exits for other periphery players lacking regular football.

Joe Gelhardt and Charlie Cresswell are the two top players in that sense, despite their infrequent appearances in recent months.

When asked about this during his pre-Sunderland press conference, Farke responded (via the Yorkshire Evening Post): “No, because you can’t be successful in the league with only 11 players in starting lineups.” You need the entire group, and I don’t differentiate between players who start and those who come off the bench.

“Quite frequently, you have different seasons. There are players that were in the starting lineup for the first 10 games and are now either on the bench or do not make the game day roster.

“The momentum shifts so quickly, and obviously when you’re playing, everything is fine, but when you’re just on the bench and not in the gameday squad, you’re not as happy and want to play again.” That’s perfectly typical.

“But if we allow each and every player to leave then more or less you have to go with XI players and, no, all the players, we are fully convinced will stay with us, at least we want them to stay with us.”

Who are some of the players who are more likely to leave in the coming weeks, with January approaching? Here, we look at everyone whose near future is not on Elland Road.

Hjelde spent the second half of last season on loan in the second division, where he grew nicely, but he is currently battling to find playing time. Many expected the ex-Rotherham United loanee to receive a chance under Farke, and he may have blown his chance when he was hauled out at halftime in their 2-2 draw at home to Cardiff City on the opening day.

The Leeds youngster is expected to be loaned out once more.

Darko Gyabi

When the window opens, it seems almost certain that Gyabi will be moved on, at least temporarily. He’s barely played for the West Yorkshire club since signing in an exciting summer transfer from Manchester City, and he was a wanted man as the transfer window came to an end, with prospective switches to Fleetwood Town and Valenciennes being discussed.

Gyabi requires first-team football and senior experience at the moment.

Mr. Lewis Bate

The 21-year-old midfielder is another youngster who has been loaned out by Leeds and is looking for another move away from Elland Road. Bate has played just five senior games for the Whites since joining from Chelsea in 2021, with the majority of his involvement coming at U-21 level in their development group.

His career has taken a step back after a loan to Oxford United last season, and another exit, whether temporary or permanent, is best for all involved.

Ian Poveda

The small playmaker has unable to live up to the hype that surrounded his prospective move from Manchester City over four years ago. Poveda has failed to rip up any trees during prior loan spells with Blackburn Rovers and Blackpool in the Championship. His contract, like Bate’s, expires in June, and he has been on the outskirts of Farke’s squad at times.

To find a home and regular first-team football somewhere, he needs to depart permanently or on loan.
