Febechi Nwaiwu’s transfer portal commitment strengthens Oklahoma’s offensive line.

Former North Texas offensive lineman Febechi Nwaiwu commits to Oklahoma via the transfer portal.

When the college football transfer portal window opens, there is no shortage of talent available to move. However, within each cycle, undeniable focus is placed on specific premium positions.

Offensive linemen unquestionably fit under this category. Every program in the country, including the Oklahoma Sooners, is looking for new starting quarterbacks.

OU, on the other hand, has landed a pair. Former Michigan State offensive tackle Spencer Brown earned the program’s first portal commitment of the season. Now, the Sooners are ready to add another big man in the form of North Texas transfer Febechi Nwaiwu. He’ll have two years of eligibility remaining after making his pledge official before moving to Norman.

“First and foremost, I want to thank God for allowing me to play the sport that I love at this level,” Nwaiwu stated upon entering the portal. “Finally, I’d like to thank The University of North Texas for providing me with the opportunity to not only be a part of this organization, but to grow both on and off the field.” The bonds I’ve formed with my friends and coaches here will last a lifetime, and I will be eternally grateful for them. I’ve opted to enter the transfer portal with two years of eligibility remaining after lengthy discussions with God and my family. Mean Green, thank you for everything you’ve done for me. I will be eternally grateful, and I am really thrilled for what is to come.”

Nwaiwu broke onto the spotlight in 2022 at North Texas after joining the team in 2021. Nwaiwu was named a Second Team Freshman All-American by The Athletic, a Third Team Freshman All-American by CFN, a Conference USA All-Freshman Team selection by the league’s coaches, and a Third Team All-CUSA selection by both Phil Steele and PFF. His consistency and durability as a young player impressed in 14 games with 12 starts.

Despite fighting injuries this season, Nwaiwu was earned a third-team All-American Athletic Conference selection. His versatility and demonstrated ability suit some of Oklahoma offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh’s requirements, since he has experience playing both tackle and guard at the FBS level.

Oklahoma wanted to improve their offensive line before joining the Southeastern Conference. Then, unexpectedly, OU lost Cayden Green, a key member of their offensive line. The prominent talent has stated his desire to join the transfer portal, leaving a significant void in the future starting five.

Nwaiwu meets this demand and more. His versatility to start at guard or perhaps provide some swing tackle qualities adds a significant amount of value. The potential to advance his career to the Power Five level and into the SEC is naturally exciting for Nwaiwu.
