SAD NEWS: GEELONG STAR GRYAN MIERS ANNOUNCES PASSING OF BELOVED AUNT

GEELONG – Geelong Cats premiership player Gryan Miers has announced the passing of his beloved aunt today, with the AFL club and broader football community coming together to offer support to one of the team’s most important on-field contributors during this difficult period.

Miers, who has established himself as a critical and highly productive small forward/midfielder for the Cats since being drafted with pick 57 in the 2017 National Draft, made the announcement through a club statement, requesting privacy as he and his family navigate their grief. The Cats have confirmed the 26-year-old will take leave from all football-related commitments to be with loved ones.

Renowned for his exceptional field kicking, high-volume goal assists and relentless work rate, Miers has become a staple of Geelong’s attacking setup since making his senior debut. His journey from late draft pick to premiership player has been one of dedication and consistency, with his ability to create scoring opportunities for teammates and apply pressure to opposition defenders making him a fan favourite at GMHBA Stadium.

His most significant achievement came in 2022, when he played an integral role in Geelong’s premiership-winning side, contributing crucial goals and assists throughout the finals series as the Cats claimed their 10th AFL flag. Since then, he has continued to evolve his game, adding midfield minutes to his forward craft and solidifying his position as one of the competition’s most reliable small players.

Geelong Cats CEO Steve Hocking issued a statement on behalf of the club: “Our hearts are heavy with sadness for Gryan and his entire family as they mourn the loss of his aunt, who was a cherished part of his life. Gryan means so much to our club – not just for what he brings to the field, but for the person he is off it. We will provide every possible support to him and his loved ones as they go through this heartbreaking time, and there will be no timeline on his return to football until he feels ready.”

The AFL Players’ Association has also offered wellbeing support services to Miers and his family, while current and former teammates from across the league have shared messages of condolence on social media. The Cats have stated that Miers’ wellbeing remains their absolute priority, with the club to provide updates on his availability as appropriate.
