GOOD NEWS — HE IS BACK! Legend Returns: Giorgos Karagounis Rejoins Panathinaikos FC
ATHENS, GREECE – This is the news that every Panathinaikos fan has been waiting to hear: Giorgos Karagounis — the greatest and most respected player in the club’s rich history — has officially returned home. He may not be pulling on the famous green jersey as a player this time around, but he is back in a vital new role as part of the senior coaching and football staff, where he will oversee player fitness and serve as a dedicated Player Liaison & Personal Development Officer.
A Legend Written In Green
Karagounis belongs to Panathinaikos in a way few players ever have. Across two distinguished spells at the club, he became the heartbeat of the team — a midfield general whose passion, grit, and never‑say‑die attitude made him a hero to generations of supporters. His crowning glory came in 2010, when he captained the side to a magnificent double: lifting both the Super League Greece title and the Greek Cup in the same unforgettable season.
His New Mission
Speaking on his return, Karagounis said:
“Panathinaikos is in my blood. It always has been. I may not be running onto the pitch anymore, but my love for this club is as strong as ever. My role now is to help these players be at their very best — physically ready, mentally strong, and proud to wear this shirt. I want to be there for them, guide them, and pass on everything this club stands for.”
In his dual position, he will work closely with the fitness department to monitor player conditioning, while also acting as a trusted bridge between the dressing room and the coaching staff — someone players can turn to for advice, support, and leadership.
The Club Welcomes An Icon
Panathinaikos officials expressed their delight:
“Giorgos Karagounis represents everything this club stands for — passion, pride, and excellence. Having him back is priceless. He brings experience, respect, and a connection that money simply cannot buy. Our players will learn from one of the very best.”
Fans React With Joy
Supporters have hailed the news across the city:
“The heartbeat returns! If anyone can inspire this team — it’s him.”
“Forever our captain. Welcome home, legend!”
For Panathinaikos, the circle is complete. A legend has returned — not just to remember the past, but to help build the future.
Welcome home, Giorgos — forever our leader! 💚⚽
