Chris Simms criticizes the way the Browns handled Mayfield
Chris Simms, a former NFL quarterback and current football analyst for NBC Sports, wasn’t shy about criticizing Baker Mayfield’s treatment by the Cleveland Browns while he was a player. Simms recently voiced his contempt for the Browns’ handling of Mayfield’s injury and their attempts to replace him with Deshaun Watson in an interview with the New York Post.
Simms declared, “Baker was taken advantage of by the Browns; there’s no getting about that. He didn’t play well for a year [2021] due to a shoulder injury. They went out and attempted to acquire Deshaun Watson without telling him after using that against him.” Simms feels that the Browns wrongly used Mayfield’s injury-related performance against him, and this feeling reflects his belief.
When Mayfield discovered via social media that the Browns had met with Watson following their initial failure to sign him, the issue became more heated. Following this discovery, Mayfield asked the Browns for a trade. The story came to an end when the Browns traded Mayfield to the Carolina Panthers and signed Watson to a record-breaking contract.
Even though his tenure in Cleveland ended in controversy, Mayfield had already had success there, having guided the team to a playoff victory in January 2021 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Mayfield has had a career comeback since joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and he helped them advance to a divisional playoff game against the Detroit Lions.

Mayfield is a capable quarterback, and Simms expressed his belief in him by saying, “I think they are dangerous this weekend.” They complement Detroit pretty nicely, in my opinion. I could name only one upset that might occur this week if I had to choose.” Simms believes that Mayfield can lead the Bucs to victory, and his evaluation of the team’s chances against the Lions is in line with his expectations.
Other commentators agree with Simms, stating that Tampa Bay has a legitimate chance of surprising the Lions. There’s a strong sense of expectation for a close game between the Bucs and Lions, and many people are excited about the possibility of an upset.
