Roosters Star Butcher to Join Knights After 2026 Season Despite 2027 Contract

SYDNEY – Sydney Roosters forward Nat Butcher has confirmed he will depart the club at the end of the 2026 NRL season to join the Newcastle Knights, despite being contracted with the tricolours until the end of 2027. The 28-year-old, who has been a mainstay of the Roosters’ forward pack since his 2016 debut, has reached a mutual agreement with the club to release him a year early from the three-year extension he signed in November 2023.

Butcher, who played his junior football for the South Eastern Seagulls before joining the Roosters’ system in 2015, said the decision to leave was not taken lightly. “This club has been my home since I was 17 – I’ve grown up here, won a premiership, and made lifelong friends,” he stated. “While I’m committed to finishing my time at the Roosters strongly and helping us chase more silverware in 2026, the opportunity to join the Knights and take on a new challenge in Newcastle is one I couldn’t pass up.”

The versatile second-rower and lock has made 153 appearances for the Roosters to date, scoring 26 tries and playing a key role in the club’s 2019 premiership victory. He reached the 150-game milestone for the team in 2025 and has been recognised for both his on-field consistency and off-field contributions, including being named in the NRL’s 2023 Academic Team of the Year while studying a Bachelor of Commerce (Data Analytics).

Roosters head coach Trent Robinson praised Butcher’s impact on the club. “Nat is a leader in every sense – his work ethic, integrity, and dedication to the team have set a high standard for everyone at the Roosters,” Robinson said. “While we’re sad to see him go, we respect his decision and will ensure he leaves as a true club great.”

Newcastle Knights coach Justin Holbrook welcomed the signing, noting Butcher’s experience will strengthen the club’s forward pack. “Nat brings a winning mentality and proven quality to our squad – he’ll be a valuable addition as we build towards future success,” Holbrook commented.
