LEGENDARY GIFT: Michael Bishop Pledges $2M To Kansas State Football — Head Coach Collin Klein Hails Historic Contribution
MANHATTAN, KS — Kansas State Wildcats football head coach Collin Klein has expressed immense joy and gratitude after program legend Michael Bishop announced a transformative $2 million pledge to support the Wildcats football team — a gift that ranks among the most generous individual donations in the proud history of K-State Athletics. The announcement was made at a special ceremony inside Bill Snyder Family Stadium, where Bishop was joined by Klein, athletic director Gene Taylor, and current players to unveil the landmark commitment.
“Michael is not just a legend here — he is family,” an emotional Collin Klein told the assembled crowd. “To see one of the greatest players to ever wear the purple represent everything this program stands for, and then give back in such a profound way? It means the world to our players, our staff, and every single Wildcat. This investment will change lives and elevate our program for generations to come. We are beyond grateful.”

Michael Bishop’s place in Kansas State history is secure. Over a legendary two-year career as the Wildcats’ dynamic dual-threat quarterback in 1997 and 1998, he redefined what was possible at the quarterback position, rewriting the record books and lifting the program to heights never before imagined. His list of honours is staggering: Heisman Trophy Runner-Up in 1998, finishing second only to Ricky Williams; winner of the Davey O’Brien Award as the nation’s best quarterback that same year; and a Consensus First-Team All-American. His greatness was further cemented with inductions into the K-State Ring of Honor (2015), K-State Athletics Hall of Fame (2016), and the ultimate achievement — the College Football Hall of Fame (2023).
“I wouldn’t be the man I am today without Kansas State University,” Bishop said. “This place gave me a platform, a family, and a purpose. When I looked at where the program is headed under Coach Klein — the culture, the character, the commitment to excellence — I knew I wanted to be part of its future. This $2 million is for the players, for the facilities, and for the next generation of Wildcats who will walk through these doors. I’m just paying forward what was given to me.”
The donation will be directed toward facility upgrades, scholarship support, and enhanced player development resources — areas Klein identified as critical to maintaining K-State’s competitive edge in the Big 12 and nationally. “We always talk about the standard,” Klein added. “Michael set it on the field, and now he’s raising it off the field too. This gift says: we’re here, we’re invested, and we’re going to be great.”

For the Wildcats faithful, the gesture is more than money — it’s a reminder of the bond that ties every generation together. Bishop remains one of the most beloved figures in program history, and today, he proved exactly why: he never forgot where he came from.
