Departure Looms: West Ham Enter Race For Hearts Star Craig Halkett

EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND –  Heart of Midlothian face the prospect of losing one of their most prized homegrown talents, with reports confirming West Ham United have officially entered the race to sign key defender Craig Halkett. The London club, now preparing for life in the Championship following relegation in May, have tabled a formal transfer offer as they target a swift return to the Premier League. Hearts have yet to respond to the approach, which has sent ripples of concern among the Tynecastle faithful.

Halkett remains a cornerstone of the current squad, having penned a contract extension keeping him at the club until summer 2028. Since arriving in June 2019, he has become a firm favourite, making over 170 appearances and scoring 17 crucial goals, many from his commanding defensive position. He played a leading role in securing the 2020–21 Scottish Championship title and promotion back to the top flight, later featuring in the UEFA Europa Conference League group stage and earning his first senior Scotland cap in March 2022.

West Ham see the 29-year-old as a steady, experienced leader to anchor their backline during their promotion push. Sources indicate their bid reflects his status and value to Hearts, though no figure has been made public.

Club officials have so far declined comment, but acknowledge the interest: “Craig is a player we hold in the highest regard. He is central to our plans, and we will only consider any proposal that fully values his contribution and standing here.”

Halkett, currently focused on the upcoming League Cup campaign, has made no secret of his attachment to the club. “This place is my home,” he said recently. “I am proud of what we have built, and I want to keep pushing this team forward.” Fans, meanwhile, hope the club can retain a player who embodies the spirit of the maroon jersey.
