Kyle Petty fires off Kyle Larson, Shane van Gisbergen hot take after Chicago Street Race

Bubba Wallace puts aside 'Peace. Love. Understanding' in battle with Kyle Larson

Sunday’s Xfinity Series race and Stage 1 of Sunday’s Cup Series race at the Chicago Street Course was the Kyle Larson and Shane van Gisbergen show.

The two battled for the lead on Saturday, van Gisbergen prevailing to pick up the victory. They were at it again Sunday, making clean passes and running smooth through the corners even on a wet surface. Though many were focused Larson and van Gisbergen, it was noticeable to Kyle Petty of NBC Sports that other drivers seemed to adjust much better to the street course as opposed to last year.

“We saw Larson and SVG put on a driving school,” Petty said Monday. “This is how you pass people without knocking them out of the way. Tip of the hat. SVG wins anytime it seems like we go to Chicago except come Sunday. The tale of the tape was he got caught up in someone else’s mess. He led a lot of the race, he ran up front. People take notice, these guys that grew up on street courses understand street courses and they learn from SVG. And that’s why I thought we saw Larson and [Tyler] Reddick and [Christopher] Bell, and those guys be so much better.”

Larson had a fast car and van Gisbergen won Stage 1, but neither took the checkered flag in downtown Chicago. Alex Bowman did, outlasting the field following a mid-race red flag delay. Larson locked his brakes going into Turn 6 on Lap 34, slamming into the tire barriers. He finished a disappointing P39.

van Gisbergen, meanwhile, was clipped by a sliding Chase Briscoe on Lap 26. The New Zealand native hit the wall and as a result, his day came to a premature end.
