Stockport captain Lewis Bate pays tribute after loss of beloved aunt

 

Edgeley Park, 4 July 2026 – Stockport County midfielder and captain Lewis Bate has announced today the sad passing of his beloved aunt, sharing an emotional tribute to the woman who guided and encouraged him from his earliest days in football.

 

Bate joined the Hatters on a three‑year contract and quickly emerged as the side’s midfield anchor, earning the trust of staff and teammates to be named club captain. He was a driving force behind the club’s standout 2024–25 campaign, where his leadership, composure and consistent performances earned him a place in the EFL League One Team of the Season.

 

“Today my family and I have lost someone so special – my aunt, who was my biggest fan and my quiet strength,” Bate said. “From my first training sessions as a young boy to leading this team out at Edgeley Park, she was always there. She taught me what it means to be loyal, to work hard, and to lead with kindness as well as courage. Everything I have achieved, she had a hand in.”

 

Stockport County have offered their full support to their captain. A club spokesperson said: “Lewis is the heart of this squad, and our entire club family sends him and his loved ones deepest condolences at this incredibly difficult time. He will be given all the space, time and support he needs to be with his family right now.”

 

Teammates, coaching staff and County supporters have rallied around Bate, sharing messages of solidarity and recalling seeing his aunt cheering proudly from the Cheadle End. The captain will take a short break from pre‑season preparations to spend time with relatives, adding: “When I return, I will wear this armband and this shirt with even more purpose – to make her proud in every match we play.”
