Celtic’s Adam Montgomery shares heartfelt tribute following passing of beloved aunt
Celtic FC academy graduate Adam Montgomery has announced the sad passing of his beloved aunt today, paying an emotional tribute to the woman who guided and encouraged him from his earliest years through every step of his football journey.
The 23-year-old left-sided defender, who came through the club’s youth ranks before making his senior breakthrough in 2020–21, spoke openly about her constant presence from his first kick of a ball as a boy. “She was there on freezing sidelines, in the stands for every academy match, and never missed a game even when I switched from winger to full-back,” Montgomery shared. “She told me to trust my ability, never settle, and stay true to myself – words I carry onto the pitch every day.”
Montgomery has been part of Celtic squads that lifted multiple Scottish Premiership and League Cup titles, adapting seamlessly to defence under the club’s coaching staff after starting his career in attack . He described his aunt as “the quiet heart of our family and my biggest fan”, adding: “Everything I’ve achieved, she’s had a hand in. She taught me resilience and kindness – values I try to show as a Celtic player.”
The club and supporters have rallied behind him. A Celtic spokesperson said: “Adam is part of our family, and we hold him and his loved ones in our thoughts at this difficult time. We offer our deepest condolences for his loss.” Fans have left messages of support across social media, many recalling seeing her cheering him on at youth grounds and Parkhead alike.
Montgomery will take time away from training to be with family before returning to preparations for the new campaign. “I’ll play for her now more than ever,” he said. “Her memory will be with me in every green and white shirt I wear.”
