Everton FC star Jake O’Brien announces passing of his beloved uncle today

Everton FC defender Jake O’Brien has announced today the passing of his beloved uncle—the man who taught and guided him throughout his career up to this day. The Irish international signed a four‑year deal from Lyon in July 2024 and has firmly established himself as a versatile, reliable presence at Goodison Park .

Under Sean Dyche and then David Moyes, he has featured regularly at centre‑back and also adapted effectively as a makeshift right‑back. His key milestones include: transitioning to the right‑back role under Moyes to help secure vital back‑to‑back wins against Brighton and Fulham; a standout run in 2025 at centre‑back where Everton took 18 points and kept zero goals conceded with him anchoring the defence; plus his first Everton goal in a 1‑1 Premier League draw versus Brentford .

In his statement, O’Brien said: “It is with great sadness I share my beloved uncle has passed away today. He taught me everything I know about this game and supported me every step—from early days in Cork to scoring my first goal here. I owe all my achievements to him. I ask for privacy as I grieve.”

Everton released a tribute: “The club sends deepest condolences to Jake O’Brien and his family. His uncle’s influence is clear in his professionalism and strength. We stand fully behind him, granting all the time and space he needs to mourn.”

Supporters and teammates have already shared messages across social media, honouring the defender’s rise and the man who shaped it. Jake will step away from pre‑season briefly before returning when ready, keeping his uncle’s lessons close as he continues his progress.
