NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS ENTER RACE TO SIGN LEEDS RHINOS STAR JAMES MCDONNELL

The Newcastle Knights have become the latest National Rugby League (NRL) club to declare their interest in English forward James McDonnell, who is set to leave Leeds Rhinos at the conclusion of the 2026 Super League season.

The Knights confirmed today that they have held preliminary discussions with McDonnell’s agent following a face-to-face meeting, positioning themselves as serious contenders to secure the signature of one of Super League’s most highly rated talents ahead of the 2027 NRL campaign.

McDonnell, who joined Leeds Rhinos as a junior, has established himself as a key figure in the club’s forward pack since making his senior debut in 2022. Over the course of his career at Headingley, he has made 83 first-grade appearances and crossed the try line 15 times, demonstrating both his durability and attacking threat.

His standout performances throughout the 2025 season earned him selection in the Super League Dream Team – a prestigious honour that recognises the top players across all positions in the competition. The accolade has further enhanced his profile on the international stage, attracting attention from multiple clubs in Australia’s premier rugby league competition.

Newcastle Knights recruitment manager Clint Zammit addressed the club’s interest in the player: “James is exactly the type of athlete we are looking to bring to our organisation. His consistent performances at club level, combined with his recognition in the Super League Dream Team, highlight his quality and potential to succeed in the NRL. We have had positive discussions with his representation and will continue to pursue this opportunity aggressively.”

Leeds Rhinos have stated that they will not stand in McDonnell’s way should he decide to pursue a move to the NRL, with his contract set to expire at the end of next season. A club spokesperson said: “James has been a fantastic servant to Leeds Rhinos and has earned the right to explore opportunities at the highest level. We remain focused on maximising our success in 2026 with him as part of our squad, and we will support whatever decision is in his best interests.”

While the Knights have now formally entered the race, they are understood to be competing against several other NRL clubs for McDonnell’s signature. The player is yet to make a decision on his future, with his agent confirming that further meetings with interested parties are scheduled over the coming weeks.

McDonnell commented: “I am grateful for the interest shown by Newcastle Knights and other NRL clubs. My priority right now is fully committed to Leeds Rhinos and helping the team achieve our goals in 2026. Any decisions about my future will be made in due course, with careful consideration for both my career and personal circumstances.”
