SMART MOVE: SYDNEY ROOSTERS BENEFIT FROM SHOCK CHANGE OF MIND AS JAMES MCDONNELL SIGNS ON

English rugby league star James McDonnell will depart Leeds Rhinos at the end of the 2026 Super League season to join Australia’s National Rugby League (NRL), with the Sydney Roosters securing his signature after a late change of heart that saw him turn his back on a previously agreed move to the Perth Bears.

The 24-year-old forward, who was initially set to link up with the Perth franchise ahead of their inaugural NRL campaign in 2027, has opted instead for the Sydney Roosters – another expansion team entering the competition next year. Both McDonnell and the Roosters confirmed the deal following a three-hour meeting held earlier today, where final terms were agreed and signed off.

McDonnell’s contract with Leeds expires at the conclusion of the upcoming Super League season, allowing him to make the switch without any transfer fee being paid. The move marks a significant milestone in his career, as he becomes one of the first English players to join the NRL’s new expansion clubs.

Last season proved to be a breakthrough year for the Leeds ace, who featured in every single game for the Rhinos across all competitions. His consistent performances earned him a spot in the 2025 Super League Dream Team, recognising him as one of the top players in his position in the competition. Additionally, he was selected in the England training squad ahead of last year’s Ashes series against Australia, highlighting his standing as one of the country’s most promising talents.

Leeds Rhinos director of rugby Kevin Sinfield commented on the departure: “While we are naturally disappointed to be losing James at the end of the season, we fully support his decision to test himself at the highest level of the sport. He has been an integral part of our squad and we look forward to working with him to achieve success in what will be his final campaign with the club.”

Sydney Roosters head coach Trent Robinson expressed his delight at securing McDonnell’s services: “James is a player we have been tracking closely for some time. His work rate, physicality and skill set make him the perfect fit for our playing style, and we are thrilled he has chosen to bring his talents to the Roosters as we build our squad for the 2027 NRL season.”

The player himself stated: “After careful consideration and discussions with my family and representatives, I felt the Sydney Roosters presented the best opportunity for my development as a player. I am committed to giving my all for Leeds in 2026 and cannot wait to start this new chapter in Australia next year.”
