Roosters Keep Door Ajar for Manu, Suaalii Reunion Hopes

In a strategic off-season move, the Sydney Roosters are maintaining flexibility to pursue a potential reunion with former star outside backs Joey Manu and Joseph Suaalii, who both departed the NRL for rugby union opportunities.

Manu, a premiership-winning centre, recently signed with French Top 14 club Racing 92 on a deal running until the end of 2027, while Suaalii joined Rugby Australia on a contract that expires in 2027, with a player option to extend to 2029. Despite their commitments, the Roosters are leaving salary cap space available, as reported by The Sporting News, should a pathway to re-sign either or both emerge.

Club insiders indicate Manu is viewed as the more likely candidate for a return, with his French stint seen as a temporary detour rather than a permanent departure. Meanwhile, Suaalii’s longer-term union deal, coupled with his potential involvement in the 2027 Rugby World Cup on home soil, makes his immediate return less probable—but not impossible.

The Roosters’ approach mirrors their handling of winger Mark Nawaqanitawase, who will return to rugby union in 2027 ahead of the World Cup but is targeted for a post-tournament comeback to the Chooks. Nawaqanitawase, the 2025 Ken Irvine Medallist, exemplifies the club’s willingness to nurture relationships with players exploring cross-code opportunities.

Roosters recruitment chief Daniel Anderson said: “We have immense respect for Joey and Joseph’s career choices. By keeping cap space open, we’re ensuring we’re ready if they decide the NRL—and the Roosters—remain their long-term home.” The move underscores the club’s commitment to retaining ties with its elite talent, even as they venture abroad or into rival codes.
