MASSIVE BLOW FOR PARRAMATTA EELS AS STAR YOUNGSTER ISAIAH IONGI ON VERGE OF SHOCK BRISBANE LIONS MOVE OVER PLAYING TIME

The Parramatta Eels have been dealt a massive blow with star promising young player Isaiah Iongi on the verge of completing a shock move to the Brisbane Broncos – in a decision driven by his desire for more consistent playing time, despite having a long-term contract with the Eels until 2030.

In a development that has sent ripples through the NRL, multiple sources have confirmed that Iongi and the Broncos are in final talks to secure a release from his Eels deal, with the 21-year-old seeking greater opportunities to cement his place in a first-grade starting side.

Since bursting onto the scene, Iongi has quickly established himself as one of the Eels’ most exciting talents and a fan-favorite. He claimed the club’s Rookie of the Year award – the prestigious Ken Thornett Medal – in his debut season, and has since gone on to earn Tongan representative honours, representing his heritage with distinction on the international stage.

His performances in his early NRL seasons have been nothing short of impressive, with standout displays featuring explosive tackle busts, crucial tries, and clever assists that have showcased his natural skill and football IQ. Coaches and teammates alike have praised his positive attitude, relentless work ethic, and potential to become a future leader for both club and country – qualities that led the Eels to lock him in with a long-term contract extension until 2030 just 18 months ago.

However, limited starting opportunities in the 2025 season have left Iongi seeking a fresh start. “Isaiah loves the Eels and the fans, but he knows he needs regular first-grade football to reach his full potential,” a source close to the player said. “He’s at a critical stage of his career where consistent game time is everything, and the Broncos have offered him a clear path to start week in, week out.”

Eels officials have confirmed they are in discussions with Iongi and the Broncos about a possible release, acknowledging the difficulty of retaining a player with such ambition. “We’re disappointed to be in this position – Isaiah is a special talent who we’ve invested heavily in,” said Eels CEO Jim Sarantinos. “But we also understand his desire to play regularly, and we’ll work to find a solution that is fair for all parties.”

The proposed move to Brisbane would see Iongi join a Broncos side building for future success, with the club viewing him as a long-term replacement for one of their experienced playmakers. For the Eels, losing such a promising young star so soon after securing his long-term future represents a significant setback as they prepare for the 2026 season.
