Eels Coach Ryles Makes Bold Call: Lomax Released in Roster Overhaul

Parramatta Eels head coach Jason Ryles has officially confirmed the departure of star outside back Zac Lomax, marking another decisive move in his 2025 squad reshaping as he prioritises long-term success over short-term stability.

In his first season at the helm, Ryles has shown a strong hand in rebuilding the club around culture and key players, with the release of high-earner Lomax the latest in a string of tough roster decisions. The move frees up significant salary cap space – Lomax was on a four-year, $2.6 million deal – allowing the Eels to reinvest in their future, even as it leaves a void in their backline for the remainder of the campaign.

Lomax’s stint in blue and gold was brief but impactful, highlighted by a clutch golden point field goal in round six that secured Parramatta’s first win of the Ryles era against his former club, the St George Illawarra Dragons – a moment that came despite the 25-year-old playing through a minor foot fracture. His standout form throughout the season was recognised with the Provan-Summons Medal, awarded for the NRL’s mostspirited player, and he added to his tally with consistent try-scoring and strong attacking contributions.

A New South Wales Origin representative who played three games for the Blues in 2025, scoring two tries, Lomax had joined the Eels from the Dragons in search of a fresh start and a return to his preferred centre position. However, his tenure ended abruptly as he sought opportunities outside the NRL, with the rebel R360 competition initially linked as a potential destination before its launch was delayed to 2028.

“Zac has been a valuable contributor to our squad this season, and we thank him for his commitment,” Ryles said in a statement. “This decision is part of our broader plan to build a sustainable, competitive team for years to come. It’s never easy to let go of a player of his calibre, but we believe this is in the best interests of the club’s future.”

Lomax’s agent has confirmed he has multiple options on the table, including a possible return to the NRL or a switch to rugby union, as he weighs his next career move.
