PARRAMATTA EELS WELCOME BACK SHAUN LANE IN MENTAL SKILLS ROLE

Contracted 2025 player takes on dual role to guide youth and NRLW talent

Parramatta Eels have welcomed back former fan favourite Shaun Lane in a new capacity as Mental Skills & Athlete Wellness Coach, where he will focus on nurturing younger players and NRLW talent while remaining contracted to play for the club in the 2025 season.

Lane, who has been a cornerstone of the Eels’ squad since 2019, will leverage his psychology studies to support emerging athletes with mental resilience, personal development and navigating the pressures of professional rugby league. The dual role allows him to continue contributing on the field while laying the groundwork for his post-playing career.

During his six-year tenure with Parramatta (2019-2025), Lane established himself as one of the competition’s most dynamic back-rowers. His standout achievements include claiming the prestigious Ken Thornett Player of the Year award in 2022 – the club’s highest individual honour – and earning the Jack Gibson NRL Coaches Award in his debut season.

He was instrumental in the Eels’ 2022 Grand Final run, leading a lethal left-edge attack that propelled the team to the NRL’s peak. Renowned for his powerful carries, clever offloads and game-changing impact, Lane became a key figure in the club’s resurgence as a title contender.

Eels CEO Jim Sarantinos praised Lane’s commitment to the club’s future, stating: “Shaun’s unique combination of on-field experience and academic background makes him perfectly placed to guide our next generation. He understands the challenges these young athletes face and can offer genuine, firsthand support.”

Lane expressed excitement about the new role, saying: “I’ve always had a passion for helping others, and this opportunity lets me share what I’ve learned both on and off the field. Working with our youth and NRLW players to build their mental strength is something I’m really looking forward to.”

The move underscores the Eels’ focus on holistic athlete development, ensuring emerging talent has access to mentorship from seasoned professionals who understand the club’s culture and values.
