MANLY CAPTAIN TRBOJEVIC ANNOUNCES DEVASTATING NEWS ABOUT SISTER
Newly appointed Sea Eagles skipper opens up about family hardship amid career high
SYDNEY – In an emotional press conference just weeks after being named Manly Sea Eagles captain, Tom Trbojevic has announced devastating news about his sister, leaving the NRL community rallying around one of the game’s biggest stars.
The 28-year-old, who was only appointed Manly’s skipper last month, fought back tears as he revealed his sister is facing a serious health battle, asking for privacy as the family navigates the difficult time.
“I need to share something heavy with everyone today,” Trbojevic said, his voice breaking. “My sister is going through a really tough period with her health, and it’s been weighing heavily on our whole family. We’re asking for space and respect as we focus on supporting her right now – she means everything to us.”
The news comes at a pivotal moment in Trbojevic’s career, as he prepares to lead Manly into the 2026 NRL season after a decorated tenure with the club. His achievements include claiming the 2021 Dally M Medal as the league’s best player, being named his peers’ Player of the Year in the same season, and securing the club’s prestigious Roy Bull Medal three times (2016, 2021, 2024).
The 2021 campaign remains one of the most dominant individual seasons in recent NRL history, with Trbojevic recording 28 tries, 27 try assists and 39 line breaks in just 18 games – numbers that cemented his status as one of the game’s greatest fullbacks.
Manly CEO Tony Mestrov expressed the club’s unwavering support for Trbojevic and his family. “Tom is not just our captain – he’s part of the Manly family, and when one of us hurts, we all hurt,” Mestrov said. “We will give him and his family whatever support they need, and there will be no pressure on him to return to training or media duties until he’s ready.”
Fellow players, coaches and fans have flooded social media with messages of love and support for Trbojevic, with many highlighting his humility and generosity throughout his career. The Sea Eagles have confirmed pre-season training plans will be adjusted to accommodate their captain, with the focus firmly on his family’s wellbeing.
Trbojevic closed the press conference by thanking the community for their understanding. “Your support means the world to us,” he said. “Right now, my only focus is being there for my sister – everything else can wait.”
