Mitchell Eyes Fourth Club After Collingwood Delisting, Refuses to “Sook”

Tom Mitchell, recently delisted by Collingwood, is determined to continue his AFL career and join the select few players this century to represent four clubs. The 32-year-old midfielder, along with ruckman Mason Cox, was not offered a contract renewal for 2026 after struggling to secure a consistent spot in the Magpies’ lineup during the 2025 season.

Mitchell, whose 2024 season was hampered by injuries, managed just four AFL appearances this year but significantly contributed to Collingwood’s VFL side. Despite the setback, the 2018 Brownlow Medallist remains optimistic, refusing to “sook” about his situation and expressing confidence in his manager, Tom Petroro, to find him a new home.

Mitchell believes the narrative surrounding Collingwood’s aging list contributed to his delisting. “There wouldn’t be too many four clubbers out there,” he remarked on SEN WA. “I wasn’t surprised (by the delisting) to be honest.” He noted that not being selected despite strong VFL performances hinted at his fate.

He explained, “The narrative around Collingwood having an aging list was intentional to move a few of the older guys out. Cox, me, (Brody) Mihocek, then (Will) Hoskin-Elliott retired. There’s a group of us. That narrative was real and you could see how it was unfolding as the season progressed.”

Despite his disappointment, Mitchell remains proud of his contributions and committed to maintaining a positive attitude. “Obviously I’m upset and disappointed, (but) I have taken great pride in what I have done,” he said. “I made a promise to myself that I would carry myself as best I possibly could, I was not going to sook.”

Mitchell emphasized his support for younger players during his time in the VFL, which he said was reciprocated after his delisting. “When I played VFL, I said I would support the young guys and I received a message from every younger player (after the delisting). It was special from a character point of view to get those rewards because it was intentional.”

Looking ahead, Mitchell hopes his extensive experience and recent strong form will attract interest from other clubs. The former Swan and Hawk is open to relocating anywhere, stating, “I’ve been playing for a long time. 14 years, I have experienced the pinnacle of footy; winning and losing Grand Finals.”

He added, “I still think my body is in great condition. Experience sometimes you can’t buy.” Mitchell sees a potential fourth club as an opportunity to mentor younger players, drawing from his experiences with some of the game’s greats.

Mitchell’s manager is set to meet with clubs to gauge interest. While open to all possibilities, Mitchell expressed particular interest in West Coast, citing family and friends in the area and describing them as “a proud big club.” He believes he has “a couple of great years left” in him.
