Sheffield Wednesday Star Ruled Out for Months in Shattering Blow

Sheffield Wednesday has been hit with another significant setback on the field, adding to the club’s ongoing off-field challenges that threaten its very existence.

The summer was a period of upheaval for Sheffield Wednesday, with numerous players departing and staff members enduring three months without pay due to owner Dejphon Chansiri’s financial shortcomings.

Chansiri is seeking over £100 million from a potential buyer to relinquish ownership of the club. However, neither a takeover nor a sale has materialized, and the second-tier side has been placed under two additional embargoes due to further unpaid wages to players and staff.

Wednesday is now facing a points deduction due to Chansiri’s repeated failure to pay his players and staff on time, a situation that couldn’t come at a worse time given their current struggles under manager Henrik Pedersen.

The Owls currently occupy the 23rd spot in the Championship, with just six points from their first nine games. Their hopes of staying in contention for survival have now suffered another major blow.

Ernie Weaver, the 19-year-old defender, is set to be sidelined for “months” due to an ankle injury that requires surgery. Weaver has been one of several youth players fast-tracked into the first team this season following the departure of numerous key players over the summer.

He has made nine appearances in all competitions thus far, starting in each of their last five games, and was voted as the club’s Player of the Month for September by Owls supporters.

BBC Sheffield journalist Andy Giddings reported on X (formerly Twitter) on October 7 that Weaver is scheduled to undergo an operation on his ankle this week, which sources indicate could keep the youngster out of action for “months.”
