Desmond Howard Returns to Michigan Football as Player Personnel and Senior Scout

 

ANN ARBOR, MI – The University of Michigan Wolverines football program has announced the appointment of former legendary wide receiver Desmond Howard to the position of Player Personnel and Senior Scout. The move brings one of the most iconic figures in Michigan football history back to Ann Arbor in an official capacity.

 

Howard’s return is met with immense excitement from fans and the university community alike. His accomplishments as a Wolverine are unparalleled, highlighted by winning the Heisman Trophy in 1991, an achievement that cemented his place among college football’s all-time greats.

 

Throughout his illustrious career at Michigan, Howard earned numerous accolades, including consensus All-American honors in 1991. He set Michigan’s single-season record for touchdowns and points scored (138), becoming the first Big Ten receiver to lead the conference in scoring. His electrifying performances and spectacular plays left an indelible mark on college football.

 

In addition to the Heisman Trophy, Howard was awarded the Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Trophy in 1991, recognizing him as the most outstanding player in college football. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2010 and was honored as the first Michigan Football Legend, a distinction equivalent to having his jersey retired. His #21 jersey was officially retired in a ceremony in 2015.

 

Howard’s record-breaking statistics include setting or tying five NCAA records and 12 single-season Michigan records. He finished his college career with 134 receptions, 2,146 yards, and 32 touchdowns.

 

Beyond his individual accomplishments, Howard’s impact on the Michigan football program is immeasurable. He was voted by fans to be on The Mount Rushmore of Michigan Football, a testament to his enduring popularity and legacy. He was also inducted into the University of Michigan Hall of Honor.
