
Tubby Smith Reveals Health Battles Behind Retirement, Reflects on Kentucky Legacy
Lexington, KY – Former Kentucky Wildcats head coach Tubby Smith has opened up about the health challenges that ultimately led to his decision to step down from coaching, providing a deeper understanding of his departure from High Point University in February 2022. While his illustrious career is defined by his success on the court, including a national championship with Kentucky, Smith’s journey has also been marked by personal battles.
In a candid revelation, Smith shared that he was diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer in 2011. The diagnosis came after routine physical exams revealed elevated PSA levels. Seeking immediate treatment, Smith underwent a procedure at the Mayo Clinic in April 2011 to remove the cancer. Following the successful procedure, Smith announced he was cancer-free and “feeling great,” returning to the sidelines to continue his coaching career.
More recently, Smith faced another health hurdle in the form of a second bout of COVID-19 in late 2021 or early 2022. This experience, coupled with the earlier cancer diagnosis, played a significant role in his decision to retire from coaching at High Point University, his alma mater, at the end of the 2021-2022 season.
