Marvel Theory is the Perfect Way to Set up Armor Wars Without Destroying Robert Downey Jr.’s Endgame Legacy

Don Cheadle has to protect Robert Downey Jr.’s armor suits from evil forces, but how could the suits possibly end up in the wrong hands?

  • Fans are concerned about the upcoming MCU film, Armor Wars, as it deals with an Iron Man storyline without Robert Downey Jr.’s character.
  • The upcoming MCU film, Armor Wars, will adapt elements from one of the most interesting Iron Man storylines in Marvel Comics. The Armor Wars comic was earlier adapted to the MCU in Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man 2 and Iron Man 3. The upcoming MCU film will continue the narratives of these films, where Don Cheadle’s James Rhodes will be tasked with stopping evil forces from appropriating Tony’s legacy suits.

However, fans are worried that the film would destroy Downey Jr.’s character arc in the MCU by revisiting the plot point without him. One interesting Marvel theory on Reddit suggests how the Armor Wars storyline could be set up in the MCU without ruining the sacrifice of Tony Stark in Avengers: Endgame.

It has been two years since the announcement of the Armor Wars movie, which was initially planned as a series. While the movie has yet to find a slot in Marvel’s slate, fans no longer seem excited about the film after the disastrous Secret Invasion. Fans also may not want to see the storyline play out without Robert Downey Jr.‘s Tony Stark leading it.

They worry about the film ruining Tony Stark’s MCU legacy. However, one Marvel theory explains how Downey Jr.’s armors in the MCU could possibly come into the possession of external evil forces in the upcoming film. Reddit user u/Ancient-Session8460 posed the question in the Marvel Theories subreddit about whether Iron Man was active during the Blip.

Fans learned in Avengers: Endgame that Iron Man publicly retired from his superhero life after Thanos’s Snap but was secretly working on the time-space GPS the whole time. The Redditor wondered if Tony similarly helped in warding off threats against civilians during this time.

Since he had a kid to deal with during this time, Redditor u/RenterMore speculated in the comments that he could have sent his suits to help the people. Fans are almost sure that he could have built at least 30 more suits in between his Mark 50 armor in Infinity War and his Mark 85 armor in the final battle in Endgame. Fans have no clue as to what happened to these suits, making the theory more plausible.

Tony Stark’s noble intentions may have also caused some government or evil forces to appropriate his armors. Due to his heroic end in Avengers: Endgame, he may not have had the time to destroy them all. The new Armor Wars movie could deal with these unseen Iron Man armors and how Don Cheadle‘s James Rhodes attempts to retrieve them from whoever has taken possession of them.

Armor Wars was first revealed as a series during The Walt Disney Company’s 2020 Investor Day presentation by Kevin Feige. Don Cheadle’s War Machine was announced to be the lead in this project. In 2022, Marvel did a major shake-up of the project, announcing that Armor Wars will be redeveloped as a feature film (via THR).
