McCutcheon’s Departure Leaves Just 4 2021 Players on UW Roster

Dyson McCutcheon, in the midst of the University of Washington football coaching change, entered the transfer portal over the weekend.

Departing was a junior nickelback, or Husky, with a famous football last name.

Leaving Montlake was a nice kid who never found a proper niche with the Husky program.

Out the door went another member of Jimmy Lake’s ill-fated 2021 recruiting class that has produced very few players of any consequence.

With McCutcheon’s exit, just four of the 17 players signed by Lake three years ago remain on the roster and none have become full-time UW starters.

The 2021 roster survivors are defensive lineman Voi Tunuufi, cornerback Davon Banks, tight end Quentin Moore and edge rusher Maurice Heims.

Tunuufi, Banks and Moore each have started two games in their Husky career. Heims, playing in 14 games this past season, has been a big hitter on special teams. Banks missed all but two games of this past season with a shoulder injury.

The 5-foot-11, 185-pound McCutcheon brought great hope to the Huskies as a grandson for the great Lawrence McCutcheon, who was a legendary NFL running back for a decade, largely for the Los Angeles Rams, and earned five Pro Bowl selections.

McCutcheon’s father, Daylon, was an All-Pac-10 defensive back for USC who played eight seasons in the NFL for the Cleveland Browns.

Coming out of Bishop Amat High School, Dyson McCutcheon brought great speed to the UW. He was rated as California’s No. 39 player in his class and as the nation’s 30th best cornerback by Rivals.com.

He ended up appearing in seven games this past season as a reserve, and a dozen outings in his Husky career. He leaves with 5 tackles and a pass break-up.

McCutcheon was one of four defensive backs in the 2021 class and only Banks remains. Zakhari Spears transferred to Connecticut two years ago and safety Vince Nunley entered the portal in December.
