Geelong Cats’ Patrick Dangerfield Opens Up About Family Tragedy and Football Journey

 

Geelong Cats star Patrick Dangerfield recently shared a mix of personal and professional reflections, revealing the emotional depths that drive him both on and off the field. The announcement included a heartbreaking revelation about his uncle, whose tragic death 29 years ago continues to shape Dangerfield’s commitment to road safety.

 

Dangerfield has partnered with a road safety campaign, a cause deeply personal due to his uncle’s passing in a drink-driving incident. He expressed that this initiative is a way to honor his uncle’s memory by advocating for responsible driving and preventing similar tragedies.

 

In addition to his advocacy, Dangerfield spoke about the emotional impact of former Adelaide coach Phil Walsh’s death in 2015. The event caused him to reflect on his future in football. He admitted that the tragedy led him to re-evaluate his priorities and consider what truly mattered to him, influencing his subsequent decisions about his career.

 

Despite these personal challenges, Dangerfield has achieved significant success with the Geelong Cats. His accomplishments include winning the 2022 AFL Premiership, where he was also named the Gary Ayres Award winner. He has won three Carji Greeves Medals (club Best and Fairest) in 2016, 2017, and 2019, and was appointed club captain in 2023. Before joining the Cats, Dangerfield won the Brownlow Medal in 2016 and was selected for eight All-Australian teams between 2012 and 2020.

 

Dangerfield also expressed his support for teammate Tom Stewart upon reaching the AFL Grand Final, acknowledging the hard work and dedication of Stewart and the entire team. He highlighted the camaraderie and shared goals that drive the Cats’ success.
